1949 – Ancaster is founded in Croydon, originally operating from Croydon Road and focused on storing and servicing lorries, establishing the foundations of a customer-first business.
1950s–1960s – The business moves into retail motor sales, opening its first dealership in 1956 and representing a growing number of well-known automotive brands including Standard Triumph, MG, Renault and Fiat.
1970s–early 1980s – Ancaster expands across South London, acquiring and opening multiple dealerships and becoming an early adopter of Datsun, later Nissan, at key sites including Penge, Bromley and South Croydon.
Mid-1980s – A pivotal period of growth sees the opening of Kings Garages on Streatham High Road, introducing Hyundai to the group, alongside the launch of a dedicated Parts Warehouse and Trade Sales operation in Penge.
1990s – Ownership of the business passes from founder Harold Cole to his son, and Ancaster Group Ltd is formally established, supporting continued expansion and long-term investment in key manufacturer partnerships.
2000s – Significant redevelopment of core dealership sites strengthens Ancaster’s network and supports the growth of Nissan and Fiat across London and surrounding areas.
2010s – Continued expansion across London, Surrey and Kent, including major showroom redevelopments, new site acquisitions and the development of Hyundai into a key brand within the group.
2020s – Ancaster adapts to a changing automotive landscape with digital services, online buying tools and the addition of new brands, while continuing to invest in people, facilities and customer experience.
Today – Ancaster operates 11 dealership locations and a dedicated trade parts centre, representing leading automotive brands including Nissan, Hyundai, MG, Renault, Dacia and Changan.
