What's the best way to remember stopping distances?

Overall stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance

So what is thinking distance?

Thinking distance is how long it takes you: the driver to register and to activate the brakes. So REMEMBER approximately 1 foot for every mph.

For example: 30 mph = 30 feet of thinking distance travelled.

What is braking distance?

Braking distance is the distance the car will travel AFTER the brakes are applied. This is greatly affected by the speed, as the faster the car the more momentum and the longer the stopping distance.

In general, higher speeds allows for less time to identify an issue and to react, taking longer to stop, and greater momentum causes a larger impact in the case of a collision.

Many other factors can impact stopping distances such as: the weather, tyres, quality of brakes, quality and level of the road, speed, and driving ability e.g. tiredness.

So don't risk it! Be aware!
