From 25 October 2021, the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which covers the same area as the Congestion Charge zone will be expanding from Central London up to, but not including, the North Circular road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205), covering a substantially larger area. The Mayor of London introduced the ULEZ in April to tackle air pollution and deal with the public health emergency in improving the health and well-being of all Londoners.
Unlike the Congestion Charge, the ULEZ includes tighter emission standards (or pay the daily charge) and will be in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year except Christmas Day.
Who is affected?
Strict emission standards apply to vehicles that do not meet the ULEZ emissions standards. Generally speaking, petrol cars older than 14 years old and diesel cars over 5 years old will be charged. Any non-compliant vehicles will have to pay a daily charge of £12.50 per day and £100 for heavier vehicles (lorries over 3.5 tonnes and buses/coaches over 5 tonnes), this being in addition to the Congestion Charge if you drive in Central London as well. However, if you are only parked within the zone without actually driving through, you won’t need to pay ULEZ charge.
You can check the details and standards on the TFL website (https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone) to find out if your vehicle complies with ULEZ.
