THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE NISSAN MICRA
First Generation (1982-1992)
Since its debut in the UK in 1982, the Nissan Micra has been a staple of urban mobility, known for its light handling and reliability. The first-generation Micra quickly became a favourite among learner drivers, offering a range of engines, including a 1.2-litre option, and both manual and automatic transmissions. Initially available as a three-door, a five-door variant was later introduced to compete with other superminis. Its reputation for dependability was cemented when it was named the most reliable car in its class in 1995.
Second Generation (1992-2002)
The second-generation Micra arrived in 1992, bringing new technology such as ABS, electric windows and power steering. These advancements helped it secure the prestigious European Car of the Year award in 1993. A major facelift in 1997 kept it competitive, and many examples of this generation remain on the road today.
Third Generation (2002-2010)
In 2002, the third-generation Micra introduced a bold new design inspired by Nissan’s mm.e concept. Moving away from its conservative styling, this version featured a distinctive rounded shape. In 2005, Nissan added the Micra C+C, a hard-top convertible with a retractable metal roof, taking cues from the classic Nissan Figaro. Notably, it was also available in baby pink, adding a touch of uniqueness. This generation remained popular until its replacement in 2010.
Fourth Generation (2010-2017)
The fourth-generation Micra featured a sleeker interpretation of the previous model’s design, with smooth lines for a more modern look. It was the first Micra to be sold exclusively as a five-door model and introduced improvements in fuel efficiency, aerodynamics and in-car technology, including navigation. A 2013 update kept it fresh before it was replaced in 2017.
Fifth Generation (2017-Present)
Unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the latest generation of the Micra took a dramatic turn with sharp, angular styling and hidden rear door handles, giving it a sportier profile. The interior received an upgrade in materials, providing a more premium feel. These enhancements led to the Micra winning the First Car ‘Car of the Year’ award in both 2018 and 2019.
The Future: Sixth Generation Micra (2025)
Now, Nissan is set to electrify the roads once again with the return of the Micra nameplate in 2025. The all-new Micra will be a stylish, fully electric urban vehicle, designed at Nissan Design Europe in London and built at Ampere ElectriCity in Douai, France.
The All-New Micra stays true to its heritage with a bold yet practical design, offering a compact package that delivers both efficiency and excitement. Built on the AmpR Small platform, shared with Renault’s R5, it will be available with two battery options: 40kWh and 52kWh, providing a maximum range of over 248 miles. This means drivers can enjoy a combination of cutting-edge EV performance and the practicality expected from a city-friendly hatchback.
Sales of the all-new Micra will begin before the end of 2025, offering an exciting new option for urban drivers looking to make the switch to electric.
