Sunderland, UK – At first glance, a major industrial hub might not seem like a haven for wildlife. Yet, thanks to a recent rewilding project, the Nissan Sunderland Plant has become home to an array of species, including water voles, amphibians, bats, badgers, and breeding birds of prey.
The project, led by the plant’s Engineering team in collaboration with solar farm developer Atrato Partners Ltd, has transformed an uninhabited marshland into a thriving wildlife habitat in just over a year.
Andy Barker, Engineering Manager at Nissan Sunderland Plant, shared his excitement about the initiative:
“We're passionate about sustainability, so it is fantastic to be able to create an area for wildlife to thrive. This project continues the sustainability journey we began nearly 20 years ago with our first wind farm and our second solar farm. It’s amazing to see how quickly and how many animals have made this area their home.”
A New Wildlife Haven
As part of the rewilding, teams removed invasive shrubs, revitalised the habitat, and constructed a viewing hide for observing the local wildlife. The area now supports a diverse range of species, including:
- Birds: Owls, herring gulls, buzzards, and kestrels.
- Mammals: Badgers and deer.
- Amphibians: Great crested newts.
- Flora: Bee orchids, white clover, cowslips, and garden lupins.
The project also included the creation of a new pond and grassland, enhancing the existing marshland’s ecosystem.
Driving Sustainability
The rewilding effort is part of a broader sustainability strategy at the Sunderland Plant. With its wind and solar farms, the plant now generates 20% of its electricity from renewable sources.
These initiatives align with Nissan’s EV36Zero blueprint, which aims to establish the Sunderland Plant as a flagship hub for electric vehicles, renewable energy, and battery production. Under its global Ambition 2030 strategy, Nissan is committed to becoming carbon neutral across the life cycle of its products by fiscal year 2050, working towards a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.
