The new MG HS SUV has claimed two major accolades at the 2025 What Car? Car of the Year Awards, reinforcing the brand’s reputation for value and innovation. The MG HS PHEV was named ‘Plug-in Hybrid of the Year’, while the petrol-powered HS SE earned the title of ‘Best Family SUV for Value’.
A Winning Formula
Steve Huntingford, Editor at What Car?, praised MG’s latest success:
"MG's product offering continues to impress the What Car? team. The HS SUV follows in the footsteps of the award-winning MG4 EV hatchback, being another very competent all-rounder."
The MG HS PHEV, which made its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, was lauded for its premium interior and impressive electric-only range of up to 75 miles. Judges highlighted its affordability, stating:
"While most of the cars in its class really only make sense as company cars, the MG HS shows that a practical plug-in hybrid with an upmarket interior and a long electric-only range can also be a surprisingly affordable private buy."
Meanwhile, the petrol-powered MG HS SE 1.5T, which starts at £24,995, was recognised for offering exceptional value in the family SUV segment. What Car? experts noted:
"In 1.5-litre petrol form, the only alternatives to the MG HS that are available for similar money are both smaller and far less practical."
MG’s Commitment to Value and Performance
David Allison, Head of Product and Planning at MG Motor UK, expressed his delight at the recognition:
"The new MG HS models were designed to raise the bar even higher with more equipment and functionality, distinctive MG styling, and a choice of advanced petrol or plug-in hybrid powertrains. Two awards from the What Car? experts are a great endorsement for our best-selling MG. We’re confident that this accolade will attract even more customers to our brand, as well as impressing existing owners looking for an upgrade."
He also highlighted the HS PHEV’s appeal to families, stating:
"A 75-mile electric range means most daily commutes can be covered on a single charge, while for longer journeys, the petrol engine and large fuel tank provide added security, making it a compelling choice."
Sales Success and Market Growth
The MG HS was one of the UK’s best-selling models in 2024, achieving 30,207 sales and ranking as the 8th best-selling car in the country. MG also reached a milestone by securing 10th place in UK vehicle registrations, marking a first for the brand.
The latest HS range continues to offer outstanding value, with prices starting from £24,995 for the petrol HS SE 1.5T and £33,995 for the range-topping HS Trophy PHEV. As with all MG models, the HS comes with a 7-year/80,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty and is supported by MG’s 160-strong dealer network across the UK.
