Cold weather impacts range not just due to battery chemistry but also because of added energy demands. For instance:

  • Heating and Lighting: Running the cabin heater at full blast or using headlights more often in foggy conditions consumes extra power.
  • Road Conditions: Snow, slush, and wind increase rolling resistance, forcing the vehicle to expend more energy.
  • Reduced Regenerative Braking: On icy roads, regenerative braking becomes less effective, making it harder to recover energy during your journey.

A Common Challenge for All Vehicles

It’s worth noting that cold weather doesn’t uniquely affect EVs. Petrol and diesel vehicles also become less efficient in winter, leading to increased fuel consumption and more frequent trips to the pump.

  • Use Heated Seats: They use less energy than heating the entire cabin.
