Electric vehicle (EV) sales are constantly on the rise, however, the recent increase in energy costs raises the question as to whether this will also impact EV owners.
Typically, many EV owners opt for home charging cables which are mainly used overnight. Despite this, a report by the RAC states that although there has been a rise in energy costs, owning an EV will remain cheaper in the long run compared to Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles. Overall, EV’s are cheaper to maintain and cost on average 30% less to service. Other benefits such as zero road tax charges, cheaper parking and the avoidance of congestion charge zones mean that on a whole EV’s still remain lower than the typical ICE. The report also confirms that charging overnight during off-peak hours decreases energy prices. These benefits combined with off-peak charging will benefit EV owners.
The evolution of EV’s over the years has resulted in improved price variety, which is beneficial for lower income families interested in purchasing an EV. Therefore, with increased variety and the ability to reduce carbon emissions while remaining cheaper in the long-run, EV sales will continue to rise.
