As the temperature takes a drastic drop over the winter months, it is important to think about how you can prepare your car for the colder weather and ensure that you are driving safely. If the roads are icy or covered in snow try to find another way to get to your destination to avoid accidents. If this isn't an option then the first step is to make sure you are up to date with your service and to book a winter health check. Once that’s done you can use the following tips to stay safe this winter.
- Check your tyres - Ensure they aren’t worn and have the correct tread depth for grip, especially in icy weather.
- Control your speed - Leave a good distance between you and the car in front. In dry conditions, the two-second rule to the car in front applies but in icy weather this should be up to 10 times greater.
- Look ahead - This may sound obvious but this is the easiest way to stay in control.
- Drive smoothly - If you apply too much power or brake too quickly this can upset the balance of the car and lead to an unsafe situation.
- Don't ignore faults - Pay attention to any dashboard warning lights and make sure that your windscreen hasn't got any cracks. If your car isn't performing properly it could cause a breakdown or accident.
- Don't ignore road signs - Don't just copy the car in front of you, road signs and markings can give you important information about the road surface, how steep the road is, what the limit is and what is coming ahead.
- Checking your battery – Car batteries can be impacted by cold weather.
- Antifreeze - Ensure your engine coolant is topped up with antifreeze.
- Breakdown policy - Ensure you have a breakdown policy set up for emergencies.
- Dress for the climate - Even though modern cars come with climate control, heated seats etc. always make sure you're dressed for the weather encase your break down.
