Changan may be one of the newest automotive names on UK roads, but the Chinese manufacturer is already preparing its next big move. After entering Britain with fully electric models, Changan has confirmed that plug-in hybrid versions of both the Deepal S05 and Deepal S07 are planned for later in 2026.

And that could prove to be an important step for the brand.

From EV-Only to More Choice

Changan's UK range currently centres around two electric SUVs: the Deepal S05 and the larger Deepal S07.

The S07 was the model that introduced many UK buyers to Changan and its Deepal brand, while the smaller S05 has expanded the range further. Both showcase the company's focus on electric power, technology and competitive pricing.

But Changan isn't planning to remain an EV-only proposition in Britain.

According to Changan's UK website, plug-in hybrid versions of both the S05 and S07 are planned to arrive later in 2026.

That's significant because it opens the brand to a completely different group of buyers.

Why PHEVs Could Be a Big Deal for Changan

Not every UK driver is ready to make the jump to a fully electric car.

Some motorists regularly cover long distances, others don't have access to convenient home charging, and some simply want the reassurance of a petrol engine alongside an electric powertrain.

That's where a plug-in hybrid can make sense.

A PHEV can offer electric driving for shorter everyday journeys while retaining an engine for longer trips. For buyers interested in electrification but not yet ready to rely entirely on charging infrastructure, it can provide a useful middle ground.

For Changan, that means the S05 and S07 could soon appeal to considerably more customers.

Rather than asking buyers to choose Changan and make the switch to a full EV at the same time, the company will be able to offer another route into the brand.

The S05 and S07 Are Just the Beginning

The announcement also gives us a better idea of Changan's wider ambitions for the UK.

The company isn't simply bringing a couple of electric SUVs over and seeing what happens. It's steadily building a broader range around Deepal, while establishing a growing dealer presence and introducing different powertrain options.

Adding plug-in hybrid versions of two existing models is a logical next step.

Customers familiar with the S05 or S07 will potentially be able to choose the powertrain that works best for them rather than having to look elsewhere if a fully electric car doesn't fit their lifestyle.

That's particularly important in the highly competitive UK SUV market.

What Will the PHEVs Offer?

This is where things get particularly interesting.

Changan has confirmed that the plug-in hybrids are coming, but full UK specifications, pricing and exact launch dates have yet to be announced.

Those details could make or break the proposition.

Electric range will be one of the key figures to watch. A strong EV-only range could allow many owners to complete their normal commute or everyday journeys without regularly using the petrol engine.

Charging speed, performance and fuel economy will matter too.

Then there's price.

Changan has already demonstrated that it wants to compete aggressively in the UK market. If the S05 and S07 PHEVs arrive with strong specifications and attractive pricing, they could give established manufacturers another serious competitor to worry about.

More Than Just Another EV Brand

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is what this tells us about Changan itself.

When a new Chinese manufacturer enters Britain, it's easy to view it simply as another company trying to capture a share of the rapidly growing EV market.

Changan's plans suggest something broader.

With the Deepal S05 and S07 already establishing the range, plug-in hybrids coming later in 2026 and further models expected to follow, Changan appears to be laying the foundations for a much larger UK presence.

Offering both electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles could be particularly valuable while British buyers remain divided over when—or whether—to make the complete transition to electric driving.

For some customers, an EV will already make perfect sense.

For others, a plug-in hybrid could be the stepping stone they're looking for.

And Changan wants to sell to both.

What Happens Next?

The next pieces of the puzzle will be the UK specifications and prices.

If Changan can combine useful electric-only range, strong technology and competitive pricing with the flexibility of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, the upcoming S05 and S07 PHEVs could become important additions to its British line-up.

For a company still establishing its name in the UK, that's potentially a much bigger story than simply launching two more variants.

Changan has arrived in Britain as an EV manufacturer. By the end of 2026, it could look like a very different proposition.
