This month marks 90 years since Škoda Auto began production of the Superb, a model that has become synonymous with innovation, refinement, and space. Since its first appearance in March 1935, the Superb has remained a hallmark of the brand’s engineering prowess, now continuing its legacy into a fourth modern generation.
Originally launched to serve the most discerning drivers of the era, the Superb impressed with its progressive chassis design, hydraulic brakes, and a modern 12V electrical system – cutting-edge for its time. Nearly a century on, the Superb has evolved into one of Škoda’s most celebrated models, now offered with a wide choice of powertrains including plug-in hybrid variants capable of over 75 miles of electric-only range (WLTP).
A Proud Past: The Original Superb (1935–1949)
Škoda began production of the original Superb at its Mladá Boleslav facility in March 1935, following a period of technical transformation. The first model, the Škoda 640 Superb, featured a six-cylinder engine producing 55 hp and delivered both comfort and technical advancement with hydraulic braking and independent suspension.
More powerful variants followed, including a 96 hp V8 engine, while a variety of wheelbases and body styles – from saloons to bespoke open-top designs – were offered to meet diverse customer needs. Notably, a 4×4 military version was also developed. By the end of production in 1949, Škoda had manufactured around 890 passenger cars and 1,630 military derivatives, laying the foundation for a nameplate that would return decades later.
A Modern Renaissance: 2001 Onwards
After a 50-year hiatus, Škoda reintroduced the Superb name in 2001, re-entering the upper-mid-class segment with a saloon offering a spacious cabin, advanced safety features, and a refined driving experience. Powertrain options ranged up to a 2.8-litre V6, paired with Tiptronic transmission and bi-xenon headlights – making it one of the most technologically advanced Škoda models of its time.
The Superb’s second generation launched in 2008, introducing a new Estate variant and greater flexibility, while the third generation in 2015 built on this success with contemporary styling and even more efficient engines.
