These updates keep the Scheme affordable and sustainable for the long term. If you already have a lease, nothing is changing right now. These updates will only apply to new orders on or after 1st July 2026.
Your lease will still include:
- Insurance for up to three drivers
- Servicing and maintenance
- Dedicated support from the Motability team
So what is changing from 1st July?
Advance payments and some “in-life” costs will include VAT at the standard rate
Mileage allowance will be 30,000 miles over 3 years. Excess mileage will be charged at 25p per mile (inc. VAT). The average Scheme customer does around 7,500 miles per year and so the new allowance will cover most drivers.
Tyres will include up to 6 replacements across the 3 years and up to 4 for damaged tyres. On average customers tend to replace 2 tyres in a 3 year lease. RAC figures state that you can expect around 20,000 miles from your front tyres and 40,000 from your rear tyres. So the new allowance comfortably covers most customers needs.
EU Breakdown cover is still available but customers will need to request a VE103 certificate from the RAC which has an admin fee of £22. The certificate lasts 12 months and covers all trips within this period.
Could You Order Before the Changes?
You can place your next Motability order up to 3 months before your current lease ends. That means if your renewal date falls between now and September 2026, you may still be able to secure your next vehicle before the new changes take effect.
