At Ancaster Group, we’re shining a spotlight on the people behind the scenes who make our business thrive. This week, we sat down with Richard Clapshoe, General Sales Manager at Eltham Nissan, to hear more about his journey and experiences in the Automotive Industry. Here’s what he had to say!
Hi Richard, what inspired you to get into the motor industry? Was it always a passion, or did you fall into it?
"I’m a complete petrol head, so it was always meant to be. My stepdad was in the motor industry for 35 years, and that really influenced me. There was nowhere else for me to go – it’s in my blood!"
So, it sounds like being in the motor industry was pretty much meant to be for you! What was your first car?
"My first car was a Mk1 Ford Fiesta Ghia. I still think it was a great car – it holds a lot of fond memories for me."
Great car! What’s the most exciting part of your job as a manager?
"For me, it’s helping an exec close a tricky deal or smashing a monthly budget. That’s when you really feel the buzz of success and teamwork."
That does sound rewarding! How has the automotive industry changed since you first started?
"The internet completely transformed the industry. When I started selling cars, we were advertising in the motoring sections of national newspapers. Now, everything is online – it’s a completely different game."
What’s a common misconception people have about working in a car dealership?
"People think you know the value of every car on the road off the top of your head. It’s just not possible – there’s so much to consider!"
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had working at Ancaster so far?
"Some of the financial successes we’ve had over the years have been really rewarding. It’s a great feeling to see all the hard work pay off."
That’s something to be proud of! Do you have a personal favourite car in the showroom right now?
"I really like the X-Trail E-4orce. It’s such a brilliant car – great design, great tech, and perfect for so many different lifestyles."
Great choice! What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you outside of work?
"Not many people know that I’ve flown on Concorde – it was an incredible experience. I’m also a distant relation to the Colemans Mustard family, which is a fun little fact!"
Wow, what a cool family connection! Finally, what piece of advice would you give to someone considering a career in the automotive industry?
"Be prepared to work hard and do that extra bit that others won’t. It’s a competitive industry, but the rewards are worth it if you’re willing to put in the effort."
Thanks Richard!
