Spotlight on Mick Gallard: 16 Years of Passion and Excellence at Ancaster

Meet Mick Gallard, Brand Manager at Ancaster, whose journey through the automotive industry spans over 16 years. With a deep connection to the motor trade, Mick shares his story, insights, and advice in this engaging interview.

What inspired you to get into the motor industry? Was it always a passion, or did you fall into it?

It’s in my blood. My father ran his own Aftersales business for as long as I can remember, which is where it all started for me. Although I did ‘fall into’ the Sales side of the business by accident!

What was your first car, and do you have any fun or unforgettable stories about it?

My first car was a Ford Fiesta. Driving into college on my first day was unforgettable—but my first accident? Definitely a moment to forget!

What’s the most exciting part of your job as a manager?

Seeing the business grow and watching individuals grow with it. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness that development.

How has the automotive industry changed since you first started?

The most significant change for me is the technology and performance in modern cars. The move to electrification is fascinating. Even as a massive petrolhead, I’ve been driving electric vehicles for a good eight years now. I absolutely love the comfort, performance, and tech that comes with EVs.

What’s a common misconception people have about working in a car dealership?

That it isn’t a skilled job. All staff are highly trained and regulated—from Technicians and Sales Advisors to Senior Management. Everyone is a skilled, trained professional.

What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had working at Ancaster so far?

Winning the Franchised Dealership of the Year Award in 2016 while I was GSM for the Penge and South Croydon dealerships. It was an incredible achievement!

Do you have a personal favourite car in the showroom right now?

My car—the Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric. It’s everything a car should be, which is why it’s won so many awards, including 2024 Car of the Year.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you outside of work?

One of my favourite things to do is read. I do it every day, mainly about military and SAS true stories or some fictional pieces. The intricate planning and execution of a plan under extreme pressure is truly inspiring.

What’s a piece of advice you’d give to someone considering a career in the automotive industry?

Go for it! The industry offers a vast range of roles—not just in showrooms but also in marketing, HR, accounts, administration, IT, and more. It’s a wonderfully diverse network of individuals and a pleasure to be part of.

Mick’s enthusiasm, dedication, and extensive experience are a testament to the thriving community at Ancaster. His story reflects not just a career, but a lifelong passion for the automotive industry.
